Jelly Fish Pull Apart Cake

April 25, 2024

I don’t think I’ve ever made a cuter pull apart cake. One of my closest friends was having an ocean friends theme for her sons first birthday party. I instantly wanted to create a jelly fish pull apart cake for one of his desserts. I searched high and low for a jelly fish pull apart cake template and to my surprise I was unable to find one. I decided then, I was going to write up a little tutorial for this cute jelly. As always, you can use my american buttercream recipe if you’d like the most delicious option…just saying. This pull apart cake uses exactly 36 cupcakes, I used vanilla and chocolate cupcakes here for some variety. I never alternate my flavors in a cupcake cake, instead put one flavor on top and one on the bottom so you know where to grab (just a little tip to make things easier and a little less stressful.)

Items you’ll need:

Instructions:

Using the template above, lay out your cupcakes onto a 19×13 cake board. Fill 3 separate 16″ piping bags with white, light blue and dark blue buttercream. Snip a large hole at the tip of both the white and light blue bags. Snip a smaller hole in the tip of the dark blue piping bag. I’ve also attached a video below for reference. Next, pipe white buttercream onto tentacles and body of jelly fish, then smooth with an offset spatula. Pipe light blue tentacles and body of your jelly fish, then smooth with an offset spatula. For a perfectly smooth finish, heat a metal cake scraper under hot water, then swipe across buttercream. Once smooth, pipe small round dark blue buttercream dots onto tentacles and head of jelly fish cake. Using the piping bag filled with white buttercream, pipe white around edge of your jelly fish body. Roll two nickel sized balls of black fondant, then flatten with the palm of your hand. Roll a thin black fondant rope, approx 2 inches long for the mouth. Next, roll four tiny white fondant dots. Using water, adhere the white dots to your black fondant eyes as shown. Carefully place your fondant eyes and mouth onto buttercream (if you do not have fondant or prefer to use buttercream, you can color buttercream black and pipe eyes and mouth using the same process). ENJOY!
